Install TabControl

TabControl is distributed through the Mac App Store. There’s no separate download, no side-loading, and no developer profile to trust — the App Store handles everything.

  • macOS 14 Sonoma or newer — Safari 17 is the minimum supported version.
  • Safari — TabControl is a Safari Web Extension, so it needs Safari as your browser. Other browsers aren’t supported.
  • Optional: macOS 26 or newer — unlocks on-device AI session analysis via Apple Intelligence. Older versions fall back to keyword-based analysis or cloud AI.
  1. Open the Mac App Store.
  2. Search for TabControl, or use the direct link from tabcontrol.app.
  3. Click Get, then Install. macOS will prompt you for your Apple ID password or Touch ID.
  4. Wait for the app to download. When it’s done, you’ll see TabControl in your Applications folder.

That’s the entire install. The next step — enabling the extension inside Safari — takes about thirty seconds and is covered on the next page.

Installing TabControl from the App Store actually drops three things onto your Mac:

  • The TabControl app in /Applications. This is what owns your sessions database, your settings, and the handoff between Safari and macOS.
  • The TabControl Safari extension, bundled inside the app. Safari discovers it automatically.
  • A per-user data folder in an App Group container. Your sessions, categories, and settings live there — never in ~/Library/Safari.

You don’t need to manage any of this. Dragging TabControl to the Trash would remove all three at once.

App Store updates apply automatically if you have auto-updates enabled in System Settings → App Store. Otherwise, check the App Store’s Updates tab weekly. Release notes for every version live inside the App Store listing.
